Equine Wellness Works was founded by Susan Smith, CEMT, OTA, and is dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of horses and burros to foster living active and happy lives by facilitating recovery from injuries, illnesses, and trauma, and aiding in injury prevention to maximize peak performance. Our therapeutic approach focuses on the healing effects of massage therapy, stretching, red light therapy and exercise programs to promote circulation, boost immune function, decrease pain, normalize muscle tension, improve mobility, enhance mood, and correct posture. Our mission is to provide individualized therapeutic interventions that cater to the unique needs of each horse and burro.

After moving to Arizona and meeting a handsome burro named Milo, my love for these beautiful creatures immediately grew, and I entered the fun and unique world of pack burro racing. I soon began volunteering at Milo's rescue to assist with providing care to his horse and burro friends. My compassion for equines deepened as I witnessed the life situations that brought these lovable animals to the rescue...I decided to pursue enhancing my ability to aid in the rehabilitation of the rescued animals, and became a Certified Equine Massage Therapist, obtaining my certification at the Animal Rehab Institute.
As a life-long animal lover who has always included alternative medical interventions for my pet's care, I was trained with providing range of motion, stretches, and therapeutic exercise to help my fur-babies enhance their quality of life. My personal pet care experience also enhanced my skills for recognizing animal expressions through observations of their body language, sensitivity to touch, and guarded movement patterns.

My healthcare career began years ago working in the "people therapy world" as an occupational therapy assistant, where I've perfected my skills with body mechanics, postural alignment, soft tissue massage, myofascial release, joint mobilization, therapeutic exercise, thermal modalities, kinesiotaping, and pain management to facilitate injury prevention and recovery. By combining my expertise with occupational therapy and equine massage therapy, I skillfully design treatment programs to best fit the equine/rider combo. Learning from these majestic giants has taught me that size doesn't always matter, as often a gentle touch is best. That's why I bring such a personalized approach to their wellness and recovery.

Gentle gliding strokes that promote relaxation and circulation across surface of the body, helping to decrease hypersensitivity.
Firm pressure applied to a specific point in a muscle to facilitate releasing tension.
Applying pressure in a diagonal pattern to muscle fibers to release tension. Also improves scar pliability in muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
Applying downward rolling pressure throughout entire length of a muscle to release tension within muscle fibers.
Applying light pressure to gently release tension at supportive tissue just beneath skin.
Stimulates increasing cellular ADP to create more energy for cellular repair, improving circulation, decreasing inflammation, and promoting faster healing. Red and blue light have different wave lengths that penetrate different tissue depths.
Blue light works on skin surface tissue, reducing harmful bacteria and improving wound healing.
Red light penetrates deeper tissues including muscles, tendons, ligaments and bone surface.
Each equine has it's own needs, likes, and motivation, so I will take time to get to know your animal and design massage, stretching and exercise interventions based upon your equine's pain, muscle tension, precautions, movement symmetry, and goals to facilitate your equine feeling well and performing at peak ability.
